About the University
The idea of establishing the University emerged in parallel with the project to construct the Emir Abdelkader Mosque, which, alongside the University, is considered a masterpiece of Islamic architecture. A large number of highly qualified Muslim architects specialising in Islamic architecture contributed to its construction.
Message from the Rector, Professor Saïd DERRADJI
By the beginning of 2016, thirty-two years had passed since the establishment of Emir Abdelkader University of Islamic Sciences on 4th August 1984. Throughout this period, the University has consistently served as a distinguished centre of intellectual enlightenment, contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge, academic thought, and spiritual values. Its influence extends beyond the national context of Algeria to the international arena, as evidenced by the solid reputation and academic credibility it has earned over the course of its development.
The continuous development witnessed by Emir Abdelkader University of Islamic Sciences year after year can be attributed to its clearly defined scientific mission, which encompasses both national and international dimensions. This mission entails a profound responsibility for the intellectual and spiritual formation of successive generations, in accordance with the University’s established methodologies and academic specialisations, all of which are dedicated to the promotion of universal human values. In order to further advance these objectives and ensure sustainable progress, the realisation of the University’s goals requires effective collaboration among all stakeholders, including faculty members, students, administrative staff, and accredited social partners. These goals are :
– To provide an academic education for students rooted in our civilisational heritage that meets the necessities of the modern era.
– To contribute to scientific knowledge and the advancement of academic research.
– To promote the scientific spirit and ensure the preservation, study, and valorisation of Algeria’s Islamic heritage.
Accordingly, we will make every concerted effort to prepare the necessary scientific and administrative conditions to support initiatives capable of achieving these noble objectives, with the aim of establishing our University as a scientific reference in its various fields. This goal is well within reach, provided that all sincere efforts are unified—particularly in light of the reputation our University has attained beyond national borders. Such recognition has been achieved through its contributions to international conferences and National Symposia, the distinguished reputation of its faculty members, the rigour of its curricula, and its active, influential presence within Arab and Islamic scientific unions and organisations.
This scientific and pedagogical development must be accompanied by structural expansion. The LMD system (Licence, Master, and Doctorate) aims to provide high-quality education that bridges the gap between the university and its economic and social environment. This approach aligns perfectly with the objectives of the University of Emir Abdelkader. Consequently, the successful implementation of the LMD philosophy—whether through teaching, supervision, or academic support—requires robust infrastructure and facilities, which the university has progressively developed since its founding.
Initially, the university consisted of three institutes that were later upgraded into two faculties, and subsequently expanded to three. The university continues to pursue further expansion by increasing the number of pedagogical structures. Efforts are also under way to ensure the imminent handover of the Ali Mendjeli Annex and to enhance scientific laboratory facilities. These developments include the establishment of a language laboratory and the incorporation of Djenan Zaitoun, which now serves as the headquarters of the Faculty of Shari’a and Economics.
